Mullein is a long rectangular scarf featuring a gorgeous array of patterns and geometry. This project uses short rows in stripes, mixed with openwork lace and bobbles to create a wonderful project for the advanced beginner who would like to practice more advanced techniques.
Mullein is the eighth pattern from The Almanac Series and is also available as a kit in either Amble, Canopy Fingering or Cumbria Fingering.

YARN:
The Fibre Co. Canopy Fingering (50% baby alpaca, 30% Merino wool, 20% bamboo, 183 m (200 yd) per 50 g hank) in Love-in-a-Mist (A) – 3 hanks, Macaw (B) – 2 hanks and Lantana (C) – 1 hank
OR
The Fibre Co. Cumbria Fingering (60% Merino wool, 30% masham wool, 10% mohair, 300 m (328 yd) per 100 g hank) in Fair Hill (A) – 2 hanks, Windermere (B) – 1 hank and Catbells (C) – 1 hank

The Fibre Co. Amble (70% Easy-wash Merino wool, 20% Easywash alpaca, 10% recycled nylon, 325 m (355 yd) per 100 g hank) in Scafell Pike (A) – 2 hanks, Blackbeck (B) – 1 hank and Helvellyn (C) – 1 hank
Note: Our Cumbria Fingering and Amble samples used almost all of colours A and B, with very little leftover. It is even more vitally important to check your tension before starting to knit your Mullein because you may run out of yarn, or need to buy more if you do not match the stated tension / gauge.
NEEDLES:
- 3.5mm (US 4) circular needle – 60 cm (24 in) or longer is recommended for the Short Row sections
- 3.75mm (US 5) circular needle – 60 cm (24 in) or longer is recommended for the Lace Section A and Bead Section B
- 3.5mm (US 4) crochet hook (for tassels)
TENSION/GAUGE:
22 sts and 40 rows to 10 cm (4 in) measured over lace pattern after blocking using 3.75mm (US 5) needles.
23 sts and 41 rows to 10 cm (4 in) measured over g st after blocking using 3.5mm (US 4) needles.
