Yarn of the Month – Cumbria

England’s stunning north-western landscape with its deep blue lakes and sheep-grazed fells inspired this classic worsted-weight yarn made from fine Merino for softness, wool from the English Masham sheep for a beautiful heathered colour and Argentinian mohair for strength and lustre. Fabrics made from Cumbria are soft yet strong, making it a perfect yarn for everyday knitwear.

In November, we showed off our fingering/4ply version of the Cumbria blend, with a series of film shorts and a blog post, which you can see here

And now, in this, the coldest of months here in the North of England, we are embracing Cumbria in its worsted weight, and enjoying the extra warmth provided by this thicker yarn. This month in particular, we will shine a light on the designs that use Cumbria Worsted, which we know will inspire you to try out this stunning yarn.

Our newest addition to The Almanac Series is the Yarrow pullover! We are excited to share a little sneak peek at our newest design coming on 13th January.

The Almanac Series is a seasonal guide to knitting with The Fibre Co. yarns, inspired by medicinal plants and traditional herbal healing. You can see all of the designs in the collection so far on the website.

But if you can’t wait, we have an abundance of beautiful patterns designed to show off Cumbria Worsted at its best, including the Brenna Cowl.

A modern take on the traditional knitted sampler, Brenna is a great way to play with colour, texture and pattern. The cowl takes 3 hanks of Cumbria Worsted, each a different colour, and playfully combines the colours with slipped-, textured- and striped-stitch patterns.
