TitiTyy: 5 Things to do in Jyväskylä, Finland if you Love Craft

Today, on the blog, we’re chatting with Tiina Huhtaniemi who is the owner of TitiTyy, one of Finland’s biggest and most popular yarn shops. In this city guide, Tiina gives us a tour of her beautiful store and shares her top tips for fibre enthusiasts visiting Jyväskylä.

TitiTyy started out in 2006 as a small online shop where Tiina sold baby soakers and wool yarns. Over ten years later, they have a brick and mortar store in Jyväskylä, central Finland with four full-time members of staff plus part-timers too. They are all passionate knitters, choosing to stock only the yarns that they have fallen in love with, including their own brand TukuWool which is known worldwide.

Community is important to TitiTyy. Every Wednesday, they hold knit nights in store, where makers can socialise and relax with their knitting after a day’s work. They also host Finland’s best and only knitting festival every July in Toivolan Vanha Piha (Toivola’s Old Courtyard), where the shop is located.

At the moment, TitiTyy stock Meadow, Acadia, Cumbria, Arranmore Light, Tundra and Terra, so you can browse a large selection of our yarn whilst you are there.

Once you have finished your yarn shopping, here are Tiina’s top 5 recommendations on where to visit next in Jyväskylä.

5 Places to Visit in Jyväskylä, Finland

Get inspired at the Craft Museum

The Finnish Craft Museum specialises in the preservation, care and recording of Finnish Craft Culture. Permanent exhibitions explore national costume and the place of handicrafts in Finnish society, whilst changing exhibitions cover everything from felt and ceramics to puppetry.

Take a tea break in a unique location

Teeleidi is a beautiful teahouse located in the former city manager’s house, built in 1904. They serve every type of tea imaginable, alongside a delicious range of sweet treats to enjoy them with. If you’re visiting in the summer, enjoy your tea outside in the tranquillity of the garden.

Have a picnic in the park

Close to TitiTyy, you will find a park called Lounaispuisto. It includes a café kiosk, a stage for events and a playground designed by Olavi Kivimaa, a local Finnish architect. Grab some lunch and eat it here in the summertime.

Pick up a postcard

Tiina says that this local card shop is not-to-be-missed! Harjun Paperi stocks every kind of celebration card imaginable, as well as seasonal paper goods to brighten up your day.

Spend the night in an old crown granary

The Local Hostel offers you a comfy place to stay at very reasonable prices. Located in the old Seminaarinmäki granary built in 1851, this beautiful building has both private and shared rooms to choose from, plus a lovely café where you can enjoy a traditional Finnish breakfast in addition to delicious local treats.

Thank you to Tiina and the rest of the team for giving us a tour of their beautiful yarn shop, and for suggesting fun places we could visit in town. We hope you will visit TitiTyy if you find yourself in Jyväskylä!
