The Closing Chapter

Celebrating 20+ years of making

Dear makers, partners, and friends,

After more than two decades of creating and sharing yarn, I want to let you know that The Fibre Co. will be retiring from selling yarn. This moment has come after a lot of reflection—the kind that happens best outdoors, with Arlo, our Chief Joy Officer, by my side and a long view beyond.

This is not an immediate closure and we’ll continue to fulfill orders while stock is available. Our digital patterns will remain available, and we’ll continue sharing updates throughout this season.

The Fibre Co. is in a strong and creatively healthy place, and this decision comes from a personal, forward-looking choice to close this chapter with care and intention. We’ve had early conversations with a few interested parties about the future of certain yarn lines, and we will share news when there is something to announce.

We’ll be announcing special pricing on yarn beginning on January 13. In the weeks ahead, we’ll also be releasing over 300 ready-made samples from our archive—each one crafted by skilled hands—available on the website at special prices. We hope you’ll join us in reflecting on what has made The Fibre Co. so special.

Origins

From our beginnings in a small mill in Portland, Maine, to becoming part of a global community of makers, The Fibre Co. has always been guided by craftsmanship, curiosity, and care. None of this would have been possible without you, our loyal customers, designers, partners, and knitters around the world.

Fibre and color

At The Fibre Co., everything began with fibre—and with color. From luxurious extra-fine wool, alpaca, silk, linen, and cotton to rare and unusual blends, each yarn was created with intention. Just as important were the colors: sophisticated, layered, and crafted to evoke mood and place. Some were achieved through artisan hand-dyeing in small batches; others through the careful blending of multiple dyed fibres before spinning; and still others through natural plant-based dyes. Every process was chosen because it created depth, character, and harmony, all qualities that have become unmistakably part of The Fibre Co. signature.

Community

Community has always been at the heart of The Fibre Co. From the beginning, we believed that yarn becomes its most meaningful when it brings people together. We have been proud to support and champion emerging designers, offering yarn support and encouragement. Many independent designers launched their careers with The Fibre Co., and it has been a joy to watch their work flourish.

Season after season, we hosted collection launch events, opening our doors to the whole community—designers, knitters, stockists, and friends—to celebrate new ideas and to share inspiration. Education was always a cornerstone of those gatherings, and we offered free resources, workshops, and guidance with the hope of making creativity more accessible to everyone.

The Fibre Co. has never been just about yarn; it has been about people supporting one another, learning together, and creating a space where all makers feel welcome, seen, and encouraged. And as our community grew, it began to stretch across countries and continents—connected not by proximity, but by a shared love of making.

Place

A sense of place has always been woven into the heart of The Fibre Co.—not only in the landscapes that inspired our colors, but in the way I have lived and worked around the world. Having moved between countries and cultures throughout my life, I’ve always felt a little like a global citizen, and that perspective naturally found its way into the yarns we created.

Many of our yarn lines were named for places that held special meaning or carried a story worth sharing. Road to China nodded to the ancient silk trade routes and the meeting of fibres and cultures along the way. Cumbria was named for the region I called home when I first moved from the US to the English Lake District, where the dramatic fells, lakes, and shifting light became a constant source of inspiration. Other yarns drew on landscapes near and far, each one a small tribute to the beauty, history, and spirit of a place.

As our community grew across continents, this global sense of belonging only became stronger. Whether you were knitting in Maine, Munich, Melbourne, or anywhere else in the world, the shared language of making connected us. Creativity has no borders!

As this global community continues to reach across borders, The Fibre Co. will carry that same spirit into whatever comes next. While our yarns may be taking their final bow for now, the creativity, curiosity, and connection that shaped this brand will continue to guide us. And of course, Arlo will be right here beside us, as he always has been, bringing a little joy to every step of the journey ahead.

With gratitude,
