Inspired by the Thai expression “เบา เบา” (bao bao), meaning gentle, soft, and light, Isabell Kraemer’s Bao Bao Shawl is a charming, symmetrical triangular wrap with retro flair and endless versatility. Worked top-down from a garter tab cast-on, this design features an all-over dip stitch stripe pattern that’s both playful and rhythmic, with increases along the center and edges to create a graceful triangular shape. Color changes every four rows give the shawl its signature striped look. The Fibre Co. Cumbria Fingering (60% Merino wool, 30% masham wool, 10% mohair, 300 m (328 yd) per 100 g hank) in (C1) – 2 hanks and (C3) – 1 hank.

The Fibre Co. Transitions (50% alpaca, 50% Peruvian Highland wool, 300 m (328 yd) per 100 g cake) in (C2) – 2 cakes.

The first photograph shows the shawl knit in Transitions shade Auroral Flux, Cumbria Fingering shade Grasmere Vale, and Amble shade Exodus. These colors are used as follows in the kit:

Cumbria Fingering color 1 (C1) — first shade used in the dip stitch stripes and ribbing border (grey green).
Transitions color 1 (C2) — second shade used in the dip stitch stripes (color-changing shade).
Cumbria Fingering color 2 (C3) — used in the accent dip stitch stripes (blue).
