If you’re anything like us, when you travel and look at your ‘City Guide to Munich’, you’ll wonder where the best places might be for craft supplies and good coffee. Each month, we’ll be presenting a yarn lover’s guide to some of our favourite stores and their cities. This week we are starting with Munich, which is home to Die Mercerie, a beautiful yarn and craft shop run by Sabine Niebler-Reumann.
Munich is in the Bavarian region of Germany and it is a vibrant city with some amazing shops, museums and galleries and a strong tradition for great design. Even though Die Mercerie has plenty to attract visitors and keep them browsing (you can even enjoy great coffee and cake in the shop’s own cafe), we asked Sabine to give us a few recommendations of 5 things to do in Munich if you love craft.
She recommended:
· Visit the Pinakothek der Moderne – this is one of the world’s largest collections of modern and contemporary art with a really strong design collection. Be sure to visit the Donner Jewelry Collection which displays work by over 100 contemporary goldsmiths from around the world.
· Sample the atmosphere at Marais – a cafe with a quirky aesthetic and a great personality, Marais serves wonderful coffee and cake as well as having a gift shop and being full of ideas for your own home. The perfect place for a catch up with friends over coffee.
· Book to eat at Goldmarie – a popular restaurant with great food at lunch times as well as in the evenings and a strong Bavarian flavour to its specialities.
· Browse a beautiful store – Radspieler is a design-led specialty store showcasing the best of interiors and clothing as well as stocking a vast range of fabrics and haberdashery. Well worth a browse and beware – you’re unlikely to discover every nook and cranny on a single visit.
· Wander around Glockenbachviertel – lots of big cities have their artisan areas and concentrations of small designer stores. In Munich, Glockenbachviertel is the best place to be, just to the south east of the old town. And you can rest those weary feet sitting by the Isar River at the end of your day too!
Die Mercerie is known as a meeting place for knitting groups and a place for crafters of all abilities to develop their skills – not just in knitting but also embroidery and crochet. Look out on Sabine’s website for events in association with knitwear designers and forthcoming workshops as well as her own published patterns in store and on Ravelry.
And, of course, Die Mercerie stocks The Fibre Co. yarn. Sabine currently has Road to China Light, Cumbria Fingering, Canopy Fingering and Meadow in stock. Her Die Mercerie designs include the lovely Blümlisalp Mütze hat and scarf in four shades of Road to China Light.
