Calling all yarn lovers! Did you know that The Great British Yarn Crawl has now begun?!
The beating heart of the yarn community has always and will always be the local yarn store or LYS as they are often called. These are the places we go to find out about yarns, learn techniques and make friends.
The UK Handknitting Association was founded with the intention of supporting these vital spaces and helping publicise their incredible role within the fibre community.
If you’ve never been involved in the Great British Yarn Crawl before then you’ve been missing out on all sorts of fun. Organised by the UK Handknitting Association, the Yarn Crawl runs from Saturday 15th April to the end of June. It is a fantastic way to help encourage yarn fans to explore stores in the local area and beyond and it couldn’t be easier to take part.
How do I take part?
- Visit any participating yarn store
- Pick up your free Yarn Crawl Card (don’t forget to get it stamped while you’re admiring the yarn😉)
- Take your card with you whenever you visit a participating yarn shop between April and June
-
When you have six stamps, hand in your card to the last shop to be entered in a prize draw for lots of yarnie goodies (you need to have visited at least two different shops)
There are 21 prizes of yarn and patterns plus a prize for the most intrepid of you, who travel furthest around the country.
With hundreds of wonder stores taking part all across the UK, we want to highlight a few of our fabulous stockists taking part.
Fine Fettle Fibres
Fine Fettle Fibres offer British and fair-trade knitting yarn in natural fibres and lots of woolly workshops and events at Studio. They also have a wide selection of buttons ranging from wooden ones made in the village to ceramic ones made by women as far apart as the Shetland Isles and the South African townships. You can find Arramore Light, Amble, Cirro, and Lore at their shop.
The Foundry Works
“When people buy from The Foundry Works they are buying from a mum with a crazy dream. I’m a huge believer in people buying from people, with the knowledge that they are buying from a family-run company they can relate to. That said we work tirelessly and also provide everything you’d expect from a larger company.” – Claire Nettleship.
The Foundry Works stock The Fibre Co. yarns Cumbria, Lore, Luma, and Road to China Light.
The Lace Knittery
The Lace Knittery is a fibre design studio based in rural Somerset and was founded in 2013 by designer Debbie. Commitment to heritage, premium natural fibres, promoting traditional skills and ethical production are at the heart of everything we do.
For the crawl, Arramore Light, Amble and Lore are taking centre stage and they are looking forward to welcoming as many people as possible.
The Spotted Sheep
The Spotted Sheep are passionate about wools, yarns and the myriad of projects that knitters, crocheters and crafters turn them into. They carry weights and compositions and textures for all things wool and wonderful including The Fibre Co. yarns Acadia, Amble, Arranmore Light, Cirro, Meadow and &Make DK, in a vast array of colours.
Ethel & Em
Ethel & Em is “not your nana’s wool shop,” even though your nana may still shop there. A crochet-first establishment with a strong knitting presence as well, nestled in the heart of historic Lancaster.
The Fibre Co.’s &Make is a riot of colour that shouts at you when you enter the door. It is a firm favourite amongst the team. One of the team, Sofija, has even designed a knitted cowl, the Springlight Cowl in &Make DK!
