Description

Pelagic means ‘of the open sea’ and is the design inspiration for this cozy sleeveless cardigan. The travelling ribbed stitches on the front recall the endlessly lapping waves of the sea, and the back is made up of stockinette stitches, combining to create a garment of contemporary style and ease. The front and armhole bands are worked as you go, so there’s no picking up of stitches at the end; just the back neck band is worked from live stitches and grafted once the shoulders are seamed, for a flowing, elegant effect.

Pelagic Cardigan is knit in Tundra, an irresistibly warm and soft blend of baby alpaca, Merino wool and silk. The sumptuous bulky yarn, the minimal shaping, and a deceptively simple stitch pattern make this sleeveless open cardigan a joy to knit.

This pattern is also available as a kit, that includes the PDF pattern and 7–11 hanks of The Fibre Co. Tundra yarn.

Yarn:

The Fibre Co. Tundra (60% baby alpaca, 30% Merino wool, 10% silk, 109 m (120 yd) per 100 g hank) in shade North Blue – 7 [8: 8: 8: 9: 9: 10: 10: 11] hanks.

Construction notes:

This open, sleeveless cardigan is knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up. Some increases are worked for the armholes, then the fronts are worked simultaneously, followed by the back. The shoulders are seamed with a 3-needle cast off, with some front stitches left on hold. These are then worked as neckband extensions, grafted together and stitched down along the back neck.
