Chanson Cowl, designed by Leah Prestamo, is a substantial neck warmer, with lots of comforting stocking stitch fabric set off by a pretty lace stitch pattern. What’s more, it is a great way to use up leftover bits of yarn from knitting a matching Chanson Cardigan.

This pattern is for a tube scarf worked in the round, with the ends grafted together to form a cowl. Length can easily be modified by working more or fewer repeats of the lace section and adding or removing a corresponding number of stockinette stitch rows.

YARN:
The Fibre Co. Cumbria Fingering (60% Merino wool, 30% Masham wool, 10% mohair, 300 m (328 yd) per 100 g hank) in Scafell Pike – 2 hanks
The Fibre Co.  Cirro (40% Suri alpaca, 40% organic cotton, 20% Merino wool, 225 m (246 yd) per 50g hank) in Seraphic – 2 hanks

CONSTRUCTION NOTES:
This pattern is for a tube scarf worked in the round, with the ends grafted together to form a cowl. Length can easily be modified by working more or fewer repeats of the lace section and adding or removing a corresponding number of stockinette stitch rounds.

Advanced beginner.

SIZES AND MEASUREMENTS:
One size.

Finished measurements:
Circumference (around the neck): 79 cm (31 in)
Tube circumference: 51 cm (20 in)
Depth: 25.5 cm (10 in)

TENSION/GAUGE:
19 sts and 28 rounds to 10 cm (4 in) measured over st st after blocking using 4mm (US 6) needles.

NEEDLES AND NOTIONS REQUIRED: 

  • Two 4mm (US 6) 40 cm (16 inch) circular needles or size needed to obtain gauge. (The second needle is necessary for grafting the ends together. If you do not have two, a needle one size smaller will work in a pinch).
  • 1 stitch marker
  • 2 locking stitch markers
  • Waste yarn
  • Darning needle

TECHNIQUES USED:

  • Provisional Cast-On
  • Grafting
