Meadow is a heavy lace-weight yarn spun with The Fibre Co.’s trademark blend of luxury fibres with a rustic appearance, combining baby llama and fine Merino wool for softness, silk for its sheen and linen for the crisp hand and stitch definition of linen.
Our beautiful Meadow yarn only became a possibility when The Fibre Co. founder Daphne began to work with partner mills with machinery capable of working with light weight yarn. Daphne wanted a lace weight yarn in the collection for all the reasons that lace weight yarns are so great: the fabulous yardage, the delicate beauty of fine gauge knitting and the wonderful versatility of light-weight yarns.
The challenge was to make it a yarn that fit into The Fibre Co. collection. Daphne worked closely with our partner mill to create that magic blend of exceptionally luxurious fibres with an unexpected twist: to a mix of the finest Merino, the softest baby llama and smoothest silk, we added linen, which creates the appearance of a rustic yarn and excellent crisp stitch definition while keeping the incredible softness of the yarn.
The Meadow Palette
Meadow comes in a gorgeous range of 29 shades, and if you look carefully, you will notice the range of shades varies from solid shades to the duotones The Fibre Co. is known for. Similar to shades of Acadia and Tundra, some shades of Meadow are dyed using industrial techniques to create solid, unvarying shades. Shades such as Bellflower or Lavender however, are dyed with hand-dyeing techniques to create a unique combination of colours and sophisticated shades. And because many shades are hand-dyed, we recommend alternating hanks as you work to give an overall blended appearance.
We have three wonderful new shades in Meadow this season: Sea Holly is a bright pale blue, Ostrich Fern a rich shamrock green and Coral Bells a bright salmon pink. These new shades add quite the pop to the Meadow range.
Versatile Meadow
Meadow is heavier than most lace weight yarns, and as a heavy lace weight yarn, it can be used to make light weight sweaters and garments as well as the intricate shawls that show off lace and texture stitches. We have collected together a few knitting and crochet patterns to inspire your crafting.
Lobelia
Lobelia is a textured crescent-shaped shawl by Joanna Ignatius featuring a floral-inspired lace border, lateral braid detail, picot bobbles and lots of slipped stiches. It has been designed for two shades of Meadow yarn. Joanna’s designs are inspired by her homeland in Finland, nature, and the changing of seasons. Knitting becomes a great travel companion during the summer holidays and Meadow is the yarn of choice this project because it is a truly rustic yarn with great fibre character.
Lingholm
Lingholm is a cape-length oval shawl designed by Hiroko Payne, knitted from the back of the neck outwards, incorporating raglan shaping for a beautiful fit on the shoulders. Using a flowing series of contrasting textural lace stitches and eyelets meant to showcase the luxurious yarn used to knit it, Lingholm is a soft-as-a-feather accessory which will keep you surprisingly warm.
Originally designed in the now discontinued Road to China Lace, this beautiful shawl has been reimagined in The Fibre Co.’s Meadow yarn. The delicate edging makes use of short rows to create a subtle hi-lo hemline. The shawl is knit in stocking stitch lace with a small amount of work to be done on WS rows, and needs only 3 hanks of Meadow.
Cloudspotter Tee
The Cloudspotter Tee, designed by Lindsey Newns, is a boxy, relaxed-fit top. It features simple stripes, cuffed sleeves and is worked in moss stitch. The basic panel construction and shaping-free design make it ideal for beginners.
Seacote
Simple lace panels fade into meditative garter stitch, making our versatile Seacote shawl look different every time you wear it! Suitable for novices in short-row shaping and lace, this romantic shawl is knitted in Meadow and shaped using increases on every row. The pretty edging is knitted on at the end. Designed by Paulina Popiolek and Seacote uses only two hanks of Meadow.
Hazeldene
Hazeldene is a long cardigan with a delicate stitch pattern across the body designed by Xiaowei Bourdet. It is knitted seamlessly from the top-down, starting from the collar. Meadow creates a soft, lightweight fabric that holds the textural stitches beautifully.
