Description

This dickie top is a fantastic hybrid between an accessory and a garment, featuring a striking wavy pattern and a folded turtle neck. It is the perfect in-between project as it is not as involved as knitting a sweater but is just as effective in the outcome. With lots of techniques to learn, Valerie Ng uses a unique Soumak stitch in this design and gives two length options for the back piece – a regular version the same length as the front, or a cropped version.

Deep Sea Dickie uses Lore skeins for the main body and Lore minis for the weaving pattern, held double throughout. This honest woollen-spun yarn is made from 100% Kent lambswool that is sourced and produced in England. It blooms beautifully after washing making it perfect for this colorwork project.

This pattern is also available as a kit, that includes the PDF pattern and 2–4 hanks and 3 mini balls of The Fibre Co. Lore.

Yarn:

Main/Background Yarn:
The Fibre Co. Lore (100% lambswool, 250 m (273 yd) per 100 g hank) in shade Reliable – 3 [3: 4] hanks. For the cropped version – 2 [3: 3] hanks.

Weaving Yarn:
The Fibre Co. Lore Minis (100% lambswool, 65 m (68 yd) per 25 g ball) in shades Caring (A) – 1 [1: 1] ball, Pensive (B) – 1 [1: 1] ball, and Confident (C) – 1 [1: 1] ball – for both regular and cropped versions.

Construction notes:

The front and back of this dickie are worked flat from the bottom up, starting with the back piece. Once the front and back pieces are worked, they are joined at the shoulder using the 3-Needle Cast-Off. The stitches for the neck ribbing are then picked up along the neck opening. The turtleneck is worked from the bottom up to the desired length and worn with the ribbing folded down.

Whilst knitting the body, a unique Soumak Stitch is featured on the front and back of the dickie. This is created by a special wrapping/weaving technique that is worked at the same time as knitting the main body, using accent yarn shades called 'Weaving Yarns'. The main 'Background Yarn' is held single from the hem up to the neck, which is then held double for the turtle neck ribbing. Weaving Yarns A, B, and C are only used to create the Soumak Stitch and are held double throughout.

There are two version for the back piece: a cropped version and a regular version (same length as the front piece).
