Linksfield Socks by Sylvia Watts-Cherry are an incredibly pretty pair of top-down socks, featuring multiple lace stitches and a column of lace running from cuff to toe. They were inspired by memories of school uniforms, and carry happy memories according to designer Sylvia:
‘As I’m approaching my 60th birthday this summer, my school friends and I have been reminiscing about school days and I remembered the white lacy school socks that were worn when summer uniforms came out. My ever-practical parents stuck with sensible ribbed socks and I dreamed all the time of some lace socks. So now I’ve designed them!!!
Linksfield was the name of my secondary school. The school has closed down and is now a community sports centre and houses. But it was a school that gave me so many lovely memories and it is where I met Mrs Lennie, the maths teacher. She was the first person who really believed in me and encouraged me to study maths. These socks are really a tribute to all the teachers who see the real child that no one else sees.’
Linksfield socks have front and back panels featuring a diamond lace pattern and side ladders lace stitch patterns. The socks have a traditional heelflap and gusset heels and are knit cuff-down, starting with a 2×1 rib
This design is a collaboration for The Fibre Co.’s ‘Month of Socks‘ – a celebration of all things sock in June, with a full schedule of classes, loads of new socks designs to inspire and encourage sock knitters.
